The rich presence of Black churches in Washington DC is the topic of this image. Through the years, these institutions have served as cohesive forces in communities neglected by governments and attacked by violence. They stand despite poverty and gentrification, providing their patrons with a safe space for their spiritual needs.

The postcard was inspired on a visit to the Hemingway Temple A.M.E. Church on P Street NW. I was blown away by the energy that grows amid the songs, the dances and by the women with their magnificent hats. This Easter, I honor D.C.’s Black churches.

This image is part of the series 'Postcards from Washington DC' that aims to represent the contrasting life in the capital.
