Trinity College was founded by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1897 as a Catholic college for middle-class women in an era when they were underrepresented in America's colleges. In the 1960s, the school educated the daughters of the wealthy and powerful.

When higher education stopped being exclusively single-sex, aspiring Catholic women found they could attend the same college as their fathers and Trinity saw their full-time enrollment decrease. Recognizing that nothing was going to bring back the middle-class Catholics, the school opened a weekend college for working women from the District, a racially diverse population the school had previously ignored. Since then, Trinity has been private college of choice for the women of D.C. public schools, with most of their student being African American or Hispanic
