Because DC is not a U.S. state, its 700,000-plus residents do not have voting representation in Congress. We also lack full control of local governmental affairs, with Congress having the authority to overturn laws passed by the DC Council and signed by the mayor.

But the movement for DC statehood is stronger than ever. If it were to become law, the bill would establish “Washington, Douglass Commonwealth” as the 51st state in the union and allocate DC residents two Senators and one Representative in Congress.

No more taxation without representation. DC statehood now.
